POAGE, Ann Pohlig, 96, of Richmond, passed away May 2, 2010. She was preceded in death by Richard C. Poage, her husband of 69 years. Cherishing her memory are her sister, Mae Pohlig Andrews; her son and daughter-in-law, Richard C. Poage and Linda L. Poage; her daughter and son-in-law, Martha P. Carter and Richard F. Carter III; four grandchildren, Sarah Carter, Ann Cornett, Bobby Poage and Lindsey Felts; and three great- grandchildren, Alex, Lizzie and Parker. Mrs. Poage attended William & Mary College and graduated from Longwood College. We celebrate her kindness, gentleness and love for her family. There will be a memorial service on Saturday, May 8, 11 a.m. at the Hermitage at Cedarfield, 2300 Cedarfield Pkwy, Richmond, Va. in the Health Center's Great Room. Anthony Lolli

Anthony Anthony Lolli, 87, of Fort Ashby, W.Va., passed away on Monday, May 3, 2010, at Winchester Hospital, Winchester, Va. Born on December 11, 1922, in Cassentino, Italy, he was the son of the late Joseph and Domenica (Lisi) Lolli. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Helen (Morello) Lolli, who passed away February, 2010. Mr. Lolli was a retired production engineer for Pratt and Whittney Aircraft Company, North Haven, Conn. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, where he received the Purple Heart. He was a member of the VFW. Surviving are three sons, Raymond Lolli and wife, Rebecca, of Fort Ashby, Anthony Lolli, of Cabot, Vt., and Gerald Lolli and wife, Barbara, of Morganton, N.C.; one daughter, Lorraine Waldman and husband, Bruce, of Peekskill, N.Y.; two sisters, Corinne Marsilli and husband, Frank, of Middletown, Conn., and Irma Cazetta, of Meridan, Conn.; and seven grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, Md., is handling the arrangements.

He was preceded in death by his father, Irvin J. White., He is survived by his mother, Florence C. White of Virginia Beach; his wife, Dee White of Palmyra; a sister, Ruby Podolski and her husband, John of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Irvin "Butch" White and his wife, Laverne, of Suffolk and Jerry Lee White Sr. and his wife, Agnes, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Also surviving are his children, Michelle Gregory and her husband, Dennis, of Gatesville, North Carolina, Billy R. White Jr. and his wife, Charlene, of Palmyra, Kristen White of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Kalyn White of Buckingham, Savannah Johnson of Christiansburg, Jacob Johnson of Palmyra, Cash Raymond of Goochland; two grandsons, D.J. Gregory of Gatesville, North Carolina, and Colin White of Palmyra; and numerous nieces and nephews., B. R. was a pioneer of the insurance business operating agencies for 37 years. He was the founder of White Insurance in Suffolk, Virginia. Most recently he owned and operated Able Insurance Agency with offices in Richmond and Charlottesville. He also served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. In addition to selling insurance and doing what he knew best, he also loved Vikings football, spending time with his family, playing his favorite numbers on the roulette wheel and living life to the fullest. Carl Thomas, Lasley Jr., Carl Thomas Lasley Jr., 86, of Charlottesville, died on Monday, May 3, 2010, at his home., He was born in Charlottesville on January 2, 1924, the son of the late Carl Thomas Lasley Sr. and Bessie Smith Lasley. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Lasley Barksdale; and a niece, Elizabeth Ashby Sebastian., Mr. Lasley was a retired Building Contractor after operating Lasley Construction Company for more than 24 years. He attended local schools and was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served in the Armed Forces overseas during World War II under General Patton's 3rd Army, 89th division and remained in the Military Intelligence Reserve., He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge #60 AF & AM. BAYNES, Carol L., 84, of Richmond, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, May 4, 2010. She was the beloved wife of Francis G. Baynes, and dear mother of Patricia E., Stephen J., and Michael J. Baynes. She graduated from Cathedral High School and attended Hunter College and Pace College. She and her husband were partners in various successful businesses in New York, Florida, and Virginia. Her personal career included positions at Alderman Library at the University of Virginia, working in various state agencies and lastly retiring from the Department of Anthropology and Sociology at VCU. She was a member of the Daughters of St. Francis de Sales and she happily resided at Jeanne Jugan Pavilion at St. Joseph's Home until the time of her death. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Bliley's-Central, 3801 Augusta Ave., where a Rosary will be held 7 p.m. Thursday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday at St. Benedict's Catholic Church, 300 N. Catherine Irene Dillon CHESAPEAKE - Catherine Irene Dillon, 90, of the 1800 block of Elbow Road, passed away Sunday, May 2, 2010, at her residence. Born in Catawba, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Charles P. and Maude Hollar Rudicile. She was the widow of Joseph Theodore Dillon. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Chesapeake. Survivors include her three daughters, Barbara Jean Harrison and husband Bobby, Nancy Ewell and husband Emory and Cathy Dillon, all of Chesapeake; her son, Joseph T. Dillon Jr. and wife Rita, also of Chesapeake; seven grandchildren, Bobby Harrison Jr., Michael Harrison, Lorie McLaughlin, Cynthia Williams, Karen White, William Harrison and Trina Lujan; 11 great-grandchildren, Gray Harrison, Tyler Harrison, Spencer Harrison, Dillon Harrison, Zachary Williams, Chandler McLaughlin, Grayson Williams, Evan White, Niana Mendoza, Emma Harrison, Taylor Harrison; and a great-great-granddaughter, Riley Harrison. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 6, in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Robert Ange and Deacon Buddy Morris will officiate. Charles Leonard

Charles J. Leonard HAYMARKET, Va. Charles J. Leonard, 63, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 30, 2010, at the Heathcote Health Center, Haymarket. Born Oct. 20, 1946, in Bristol Virginia, he was the son of the late William and Blanch Fleenor Leonard. On Dec. 15, 1967, in Fairfax, Va., he married the former Dottie Watts, who survives. Mr. Leonard was a member of the local Washington Area Carpenter's Union, No. 1665. He also was a long-time member of the Manassas Assembly of God, where he coached the Men's Church Softball team for over 15 years. Although disabled due to juvenile diabetes, Mr. Leonard continued his love for sports mostly through watching his grandchildren compete, which was his greatest joy. Surviving, besides his beloved wife of 42 years, Dottie Leonard of Haymarket; are one daughter, Tonia Stalker and her husband Robert of Haymarket; two sons, Chuck Leonard and his wife Michelle of South Riding, Va., and Michael Millard of Bristol Virginia; five sisters, Margaret Denton and her husband Avery, Pauline Denton, Cynthia Monk, Jean Harless and her husband Jerry and Bernice Jackson, all of Bristol Virginia; one brother, Donald Leonard and his wife Linda of Bristol Virginia; and five grandchildren, Andrew, Evan and Nathan Stalker, and Grace and Reese Leonard. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Hershel Leonard and William Leonard, both of Bristol Virginia. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 6, 2010, from 7-9 p.m. at the Baker-Post Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 10001 Nokesville Road, Manassas. He was also a longtime member of Farmville United Methodist Church and Farmville United Methodist Men, and a member of the Prince Edward County Economic Development Community Planning Group. He is survived by his wife, Myra Jones Green; his daughter, Elizabeth Pryor Green of Richmond; and sister, Nancy Green Hood and husband, Alan, of Powhatan. Warren never met a stranger or anyone whose company he didn't enjoy. He was a kind and generous man, not only with those he loved, but with everyone. He was an avid Hokie football fan, as well as a wonderful father and husband. A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 6, 2010, 2 p.m. at Farmville United Methodist Church. A private graveside with military honors will be held earlier on Thursday. Family will receive friends Wednesday evening, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Puckett Funeral Home. Thomas and son-in-law, Arthur B. Thomas, of Charlottesville, Virginia, Rodney A. Harris Sr. and daughter-in-law, Deborah L. Harris, of South River, New Jersey, Melissa "Cookie" H. Muller and son-in-law, Lemuel C. Muller, of Charlottesville, Virginia, Gary E. Harris and daughter-in-law, Leslie A. Harris, of Callaway, Virginia, and Vera L. Carter and son-in-law, Eddie Carter, of Charlottesville, Virginia; She also leaves behind 14 grandchildren, 26 great- grandchildren, five great- great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends., Clara is also survived by four brothers, William Washington of Matawan, New Jersey, Percy Washington and sister-in-law, Gwen Washington, George Washington and Frank Washington, all of Keyport, New Jersey., In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by her husband, James E. She was well-known for her family devotion, charisma, elegance and so much more. Claude Taze Dotson SWORDS CREEK, Va. Mr. Claude Taze Dotson, age 57, passed away Monday, May 3, 2010, in a Kingsport, Tenn., hospital. He was born in Russell County and was the son of the late Orbra and Madie Crabtree Dotson. He had made his home in the Swords Creek area most of his life and was a former electrician for Consol VP No. 3, having worked for over 26 years. He was a member of the UMWA, the Horton Ridge Church of God, and the Richlands Masonic Lodge No. 318 AF & AM. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Evyleen Honaker; and two brothers, Woodrow and Buster Dotson. Homer Witt Wooldridge Jr., 78, of Bedford, Va., went to his heavenly home on Monday, May 3, 2010. Born on June 1, 1931, in Lynchburg, Va., a son of the late Homer Witt Wooldridge Sr. and Leoma Lee Lucas Beatty and her husband, Bernard. He was a member of Bedford Christian Church and a retired teacher and coach. Homer loved children and had a passion for teaching as well as coaching sports to children of all ages. If he wasn't coaching you would often find him close by as a spectator. Many people knew him as "Coach," "Teacher" and "Friend." CULLER, J. Ned, passed away May 2, 2010 after a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Jessie Clements Culler; and a son, E. Olen Culler. He is survived by his daughter, Barbara C. Mize Boyd of Richmond; his son, David A. Culler (Cecelia) of Farmville; his grandsons, David Mize (Kelly) and Christopher Mize (Marianne), all of Richmond; his granddaughter, Jill E. Culler of Columbia, Md.; his great-grandsons, Oakley, Ned and Brodie Mize; his stepgreat-grandchildren, Caleb and Michelle; and his devoted friend and companion, Katherine Burch. Mr. Culler was a retired postal supervisor and a charter member of Derbyshire Baptist Church. He was a member of the Richmond Scottish Rite Bodies and a 33rd Degree I.G.H. This was his 40th year as a Master Mason, having served as Worshipful Master of Tuckahoe Lodge #347 AF & AM in 1976, and District Deputy of District 15C in 1978. He served as secretary of the Tuckahoe Lodge for nine years and was known for his inspiring poetry and meaningful and excellent presentations of Masonic Ritual and Degree lectures. The family will receive friends at Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. James C. Elwell VIRGINIA BEACH - James C. Elwell, U.S. Navy retired, 73, passed away peacefully May 2, 2010 in Sentara Bayside Hospital. James was born June 26, 1936 in Philadelphia to the late Clifford and Helen Elwell. Mr. Elwell was preceded in death by his late wife, Catherine Elwell. Mr. Elwell served our country proudly in the U.S. Navy, retiring after 20 years of dedicated service. James was a member of the Lion's Club and the I.O.O.B. Mr. Powell worked for the Commonwealth of Virginia for 41 years, most recently serving as State Treasurer as appointed by Governor Tim Kaine. Braxton received commendations from Governors Gerald Baliles, James Gilmore and Mark Warner for his hard work and dedication to the Commonwealth. He was vice president of the southern region of the National Association of State Treasurers. Braxton was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and an alumnus and avid fan of the Virginia Tech Hokies. Committed to the idea of public service, he served on various boards including the Virginia College Savings Plan, Virginia Housing Development Authority and Virginia Port Authority. Jessie Garnett Cassady Gorrell BRISTOL, Va. Mrs. Jessie Garnett Cassady Gorrell, 86, died on Wednesday, March 17, 2010, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born Monday, July 9, 1923, in Glasgow, Ky., to the late Jesse Allen and Mary Garnett McGlocklin Cassady. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilfred Louis Gorrell; and son, David Bruce Gorrell. Among other places, she lived in Owensboro, Ky., and Anniston, Ala., for many years prior to moving to Bristol three years ago. She cherished her strong family ties and the love of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. During her life, Mrs. Gorrell was an active member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church of Owensboro, Thruston United Methodist Church of Owensboro, Bethel United Methodist Church of Blountville, Tenn., and First United Methodist Church of Bristol Tennessee. Mrs. Gorrell is survived by her sons, Dr. Alan L. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Steven L. Scott; her children, Bonnie Jean, Martin, Tracy, and Carl; and her brothers, Martin J. Simmons Jr., Robert C. John C. MOORE

Jack enjoyed sharing his passion for the outdoors with others. He remained very active after retirement, volunteering in many activities. He taught marksmanship and archery in the Boy Scouts and volunteered at Huntley Meadow Park in Alexandria. There he cleared trails, taught and managed wildlife habitat, and gave guided tours. The park honored Jack for 20 years of volunteer service. He was a member and past president of the Brotherhood of the Jungle Cock (Maryland Chapter), where he mentored youth in the art and skill of fly-fishing. He was a Life member of the American Legion and an honorary member of the Vietnam War Dog Association. In the year 2000, Jack attended the dedication of the 1st U.S. National War Dog Memorial in Riverside, Calif. Jack leaves a legacy of family, patriotism and his love for nature and the great outdoors.

John David Hundley VIRGINIA BEACH - John David "JD" Hundley went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 3, 2010. Born in Atchinson, Kan., in 1943 to John and Louise Hundley, JD enlisted in the United States Navy at 17. During a distinguished career, JD served in both the Atlantic and the Pacific fleets and was a Vietnam War veteran. JD retired as a lieutenant after 26 years of service. JD was also a past master at the Bayside Masonic Lodge No. 218 in Virginia Beach. JD leaves behind his loving and devoted wife of 47 years, Linda Carol; their four children, Lisa Brennan, Tim Hundley and wife Lene, Jennifer Mayhue and husband Bruce, Robyn Cashwell and husband Ed; four grandchildren, Adam, Abigail, Lauren and Ian. JD is also survived by his sister, Linda Tiechman; and three brothers, Robert, Roger and Keith Hundley. A memorial service will be held in Thalia United Methodist Church in Virginia Beach on Saturday, May 8, at 4:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Hampton Roads Chapter of the National MS Society. John Shelton Reed KINGSPORT, Tenn. Dr. John Shelton Reed, 95, died Sunday, May 2, 2010, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport after an extended illness. Shelton Reed was the son of Hattie Elizabeth Vanover and William Henry Reed. Born in Clintwood, Va., in 1915, he moved to Kingsport with his parents in 1918, and was graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School in 1933. George Eastman arranged for a scholarship for him to the University of Rochester, where he was invited to join Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year. He was graduated cum laude with a BA degree, and then received a medical degree from Harvard University. In 1940, he married Alice Margaret Greene of Rochester, N.Y. They lived in New York City for four years while he performed his internship and residency at the Roosevelt Hospital. During World War II, he was a convoy surgeon with the British Merchant Marines, escorting Liberty Ships across the North Atlantic. He later worked with a hospital unit and in field hospitals in England and France, returning to Washington, D.C., to serve as chief of surgery at the Soldiers' Home. In 1947, he moved his family back to Kingsport, where he practiced for nearly 40 years as a general surgeon, establishing the group practice Surgical Associates prior to his retirement in 1985. Dr. Reed participated on various boards and committees on behalf of Holston Valley Community Hospital. He served on the board of directors for the First American National Bank. He was a clinical professor and a member of the admissions committee for the James H. Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University, and was on the investment committee for the ETSU Foundation. He established the Reed Chair of Surgery at ETSU in honor of his father, one of Kingsport's early surgeons. For over 60 years, Dr. Reed was a parishioner of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. A great lover of music, he was the Tennessee state champion piccolo player while at Dobyns-Bennett, and he later served as a director of the symphony orchestra board. An enthusiastic athlete, Dr. Reed played football, basketball, and golf at Dobyns-Bennett and in college. In his later years, he especially enjoyed golf and tennis, and he snow skied until age 80, being an honorary member of the Beech Mountain Ski Patrol. Dr. Reed is survived by his children and their spouses, John and Dale Reed, of Chapel Hill, N.C., Lisa Alther, of Burlington, Vt., William and Cici Reed, of Weavervile, N.C., Michael and Kathy Reed, of Kingsport, and Jane and Greg Shaw, of Charlottesville, Va.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Friday, May 7, 2010, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church with The Rev. Edward James Mills III and The Rev. Ed Osborne officiating. Washington VIRGINIA BEACH - Julie Danielle Washington, loving daughter, wife and mother, passed away May 2, 2010, surrounded by her family, following a courageous battle against acute myeloid leukemia. Julie was born in Virginia Beach on June 29, 1969 to Capt. James Joyner, U.S. Navy retired, and the late Jeanne Marie Joyner. Even though her husband's career took the family to Denver, Colo. for five years and most recently Richmond, Va., she still considered Virginia Beach her home, where many family members and close friends still reside. In addition to raising two beautiful daughters, she held positions with TWA Airlines, Incentive Works, a promotional company, EXPO, a Home Depot subsidiary, and Home Depot. She thoroughly enjoyed making needle-point creations for family and friends, as well as being a voracious reader. Julie is survived by her husband, Tony; daughters, Danielle, 17, and Kristiina, 11; her father, James; brothers, David and Derek; stepmom, Sharon, who loved her like her own daughter; maternal grandfather, Reuben Lottinger; Tony's parents, William and Helena Washington; aunts, uncles, many, many cousins; and a very special relative and friend, her Aunt Linda (Lee Lee), who was by her side throughout her illness. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of the Medical College of Virginia Hospital for their compassion and loving care during Julie's illness. Performing under the name Lynda Faye, she was a lead singer in several local bands throughout the 1970s and 80s. She was preceded in death by her birth parents, Roy and Bertha Meeks; adoptive father, Alvin Craun; and brother, Cecil Meeks. Faye is survived by her husband of 32 years, Edward Stilwell of Norfolk; her daughter, Meridyth Stilwell Hollingshead and her husband Dan of Portsmouth; and adoptive mother, Ruth Craun of Chesapeake. She is also survived by her sisters, Patricia Worrel, Nancy White, Peggy Holloman, Patsy Gardner; her brothers, Alton "Butch" Meeks, Garland "Bud" Meeks, Leroy Meeks, Donald Craun, Robert Craun; many nieces and nephews. Madeline Maria DuBois, Mrs. Madeline Maria DuBois, 86, born on June 27, 1923, in Katowice, Poland, to the late Marie Kotala, passed away on Saturday, May 1, 2010, at the University of Virginia Medical Center., She came to Charlottesville in 1999 from Florida to live near her daughter, Rosemarie Hanley and her family. She resided at Arbor Crest, Woods Edge, and most recently at Jefferson Heights., She was predeceased by the father of her children, Joseph Filipkowski; husband, Joseph R. DuBois; and her beloved son, John M. Filipkowski. Also, by her stepparents in Poland who treated her like a princess in her childhood years., She was a wonderful and much loved mother and grandmother. Left to cherish her memory are her son, Joseph T. Filipkowski and his wife, Donna, of Jensen Beach, Florida; her daughters, Rosemarie Hanley and her husband, Dell, of Charlottesville, and Jan Vetterling and her husband, Bruce, of Lee, New Hampshire; grandchildren, Ronald Filipkowski and his wife, Jackie, Mark Filipkowski and his wife, Kim, Jon Filipkowski, Matthew Hanley and his wife, Janette, Jared Hanley, Rachel Hanley, Pamela MacDonald and her husband, Chris, and Heidi Vetterling and her fiance, Garrett Smith. She adored her great-grandchildren, Ron, Colin, Andrew, Taylor, Katherine, Mason, Haley, and Madeline, which she was so happy to have visited in Florida in February, and William, the "little one" in Virginia., By beginning her life in an orphanage, surviving World War II, and persevering through the difficult first years in America, she showed her survivor spirit. She, Joseph and son, "Teddy", arrived at Ellis Island in 1949, settling in Deerfield and Whately, Massachusetts. Mrs. DuBois held various jobs and displayed her exemplary work ethic to her children. The family moved to Greenfield in 1966. After husband Joseph's death in 1969, she met and married Joseph DuBois in 1974. They spent many happy years together and settled in Jensen Beach, Florida. Her "Romeo" passed away in 1989., She was a member of The Catholic Women's Society in MA for several decades and gave selflessly to all. She loved being with her family, and watching her grandchildren's activities. She had many, many talents., Her family wishes to express their thanks to the dedicated doctors, nurses, and staff who cared for Ma at University of Virginia and also Sandy Mowbray at the JABA Clinic on Hillsdale Drive, for her never ending, patience, professionalism, and kindness over the years., Visitation will be 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at Church of the Incarnation, a Mass of the Resurrection at 7:30 p.m., followed by a reception. Born in Ivor, Va., Sue was retired from the City of Norfolk Parks and Recreation, Fairlawn Center where she was a supervisor. She was a member of Talbot Park Baptist Church since 1952 and was also a member of the Fairlawn Advisory Committee and the Wards Corner Civic League. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed being around family and friends. Sue was the widow of Edward Vincent Freeman and is survived by a daughter, Louise Freeman Peters an husband David of Poquoson; two grandchildren, Suzanne J. Nehme of Poquoson and Paul E. Peters of Newport News; and two great-grandchildren, Amy and Mark Nehme of Poquoson. The family would like to thank the staff at Dominion Village and Hospice Community Care in Poquoson. She was a faithful disciple of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Lynn was born Oct. 18, 1924, daughter of Albert Matthew and Dottie Coe West in Comanche, Okla., where she was valedictorian of her high school class. She was the former secretary of Talbot Park Baptist Church, Norfolk, and a member of the Thoroughgood Garden Club. Martha Ann Smith Cunningham

Martha Ann Smith Cunningham, 87, of Roanoke, Va., passed away late on Sunday, May 2, 2010, at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, Ga., after a brief illness. Martha (known to many as "Marty") was surrounded by her four children as she left us to be with the love of her life and husband of 63 years, Chesley, who preceded her in death in 2007. Born on April 6, 1923, in Bramwell, W.Va., Martha was the daughter of Frank and Lottie Smith. She married her best friend, Chesley Craft Cunningham, on February 10, 1944, while "Ches" was home on leave from European duty in the United States Army. After living in several towns in West Virginia and Virginia, the family moved to Roanoke in 1968. Martha and family were longtime members of Northview United Methodist Church in North Roanoke. She was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women, and a lady of unquestionable faith in her Lord and Savior. Martha worked as a private duty nurse for 15 years in addition to helping in the family business, the Western Auto Associate Store in Cloverdale, Va. After retirement, Martha loved being at home, giving her own brand of tender loving care to her loving and devoted husband and her beloved family., Martha absolutely lived life to its fullest, up to the very end. She adored her extended family and cherished being with them, and had many hobbies and pastimes. A talented quilter, Martha and daughter, Nancy, created dozens of beautifully crafted quilts for family and friends, in addition to the many trips and events the two attended. She was an avid sports fan, and with her son, Scott, was able to attend many sporting events in Atlanta and other venues, making many new and lasting friends in the world of professional sports. Martha thoroughly enjoyed son, David's extended family, and his work allowed him to spend several nights each week with his Mother, much to her delight. She was also son, Steven's main supporter and head cheerleader, inspiring him to grow and prosper in both his professional and personal lives. Martha enriched her children's lives in every way possible, from teaching each how to love unconditionally to sharing her deep religious faith and incredible tenacity. Martha also touched the lives of her many friends in many places, and every friend of the family was a friend of hers. She left this earth on her own terms, just as she had planned., Mrs. Cunningham was preceded in death by her parents; and husband; brothers, James E. Smith and Richard F. Smith; sisters, Edith S. Richardson, Esther S. Peters, and Dorothy S. NcNiel; and infant, Anna Mae., Surviving are her sister, Charlotte S. Tabor, of Fenton, Mich.; daughter, Nancy Keatts and husband, Marvin, of Martinsville, Va.; sons, David Cunningham and wife, Darlene, of Pearisburg, Va., Steven Cunningham, of Raleigh, N.C., and Scott Cunningham and friend, Paula Smith, of Atlanta, Ga.; also, three grandchildren, Craig Cunningham and wife, Sheri, of Pembroke, Va., Kyle Cunningham and wife, Stephanie, of Advance, N.C., and Brandon Cunningham. of Raleigh, N.C. Surviving great-grandchildren are Katie and Austin Cunningham, of Pembroke, Va., and Allie and Reed Cunningham, of Advance, N.C. Martha A. Hudgins NORFOLK - Martha Naomi Ayers Hudgins, 83, entered into eternal rest with her Lord and Savior Sunday, April 18, 2010, in Heritage Hall, Virginia Beach. Born Nov. 12, 1926 in Suffolk, she was the daughter of the late William Albert Ayers and Dolith Estelle Harmon Ayers. Mrs. Hudgins was a member of Talbot Park Baptist Church, Wayside Circle of the Kings Daughters, and Belvedere Garden Club. As a faithful servant of the Lord, she served as a deacon, director and teacher of the Esther Class, and director of the Sunshine Group and Woman's Missionary Group at TPBC. Martha was the loving and devoted wife of the late Leslie H. Hudgins for 55 years. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and will forever be remembered. Survivors include her daughter, Donna R. Baker and husband Vance R. of Virginia Beach; two granddaughters, Lindsey R. Baker and Jenna R. Baker, both of Virginia Beach; three sisters, Jacqueline Layman of Florida, Elaine Vess of North Carolina, and Peggy Anne Forehand of Suffolk. She was predeceased by a sister, Geneva Blunt of Richmond, Va., and a brother, William Ayers of Washington. Mary was an educator for 30 years. She taught in Fluvanna County and Charlottesville City Schools, both in Virginia. Cash (her precious one) and her husband, Michael, of Midlothian, Va.; five great-grandchildren, Guy, Katelyn, Brooke Cash and Kristen and Kyndall Carter; along with several loving nieces and nephews. She will be remembered for her dedication to the bowling alley at McGuire Veterans Hospital, where she volunteered for 30-plus years. He is survived by his father, Oscar Ogle; wife, Helen Ogle; sons, David Wayne Ogle (Elizabeth) and John Douglas Ogle (Angela); daughter-in-law, Michelle Ogle; grandchildren, Skyler, Mason, Kaly, Matthew, Hannah, Hazel and Aiden; his best friend, Willy King; and his beloved dog, Pig. Mr. Ogle was a welder fabricator for Machine and Conveyor, LTD, Mactavish Machine and Liphart Steel until complications due to cancer. MAILLET, Paul R., 43, of Chester, Va., formerly of Gardner, Mass., died Thursday, April 29, 2010, in his home. Born in Gardner on March 13, 1967, he was the son of Yvon and Therese (Pitre) Maillet. Paul was a graduate of Gardner High School and attended Mount Wachusett Community College and Fitchburg State, where he earned his degree in accounting. Paul enjoyed playing cards and computer games, loved taking pictures and cooking for friends and family. Paul was a devoted brother and true friend. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Paul is survived by two brothers, Ronald (Debbie) of Leominster, Mass., and Raymond of Royalston, Mass.; and four sisters, Nancy Binder (Peter) of Gardner, Mass., Linda Maillet (Lucie) of Loudon, Tenn., Rachel Maillet of Ashburnham, Mass., and Paulette Maillet of Ashburnham, Mass. A native of Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Richard Burd and Agnes Tyazandlak Smith. Ricky Lee retired from MARMC as an engineer. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and had served on the parish council. A ham radio operator since 13, call sign KC4RIC, he was a member of the Chesapeake Amateur Radio Society, RoosterNet, Skywarn, and ARRL. He volunteered to make soup for Oasis and was known for his spaghetti sauce at the Annual Fundraiser for the Sunray Community Center and St. Mary's Catholic Church. Survivors include two beloved daughters, Andrea "Andie" Smith of Chesapeake and Ashleigh Smith of Virginia Beach; two sisters and one brother, who were there for him during his illness, Roberta "Bobbie" Warren of Ivor, JoAnn Ellis of Chesapeake, and Ronald Smith of Zuni; and fiancée, Margaret Galotti of Virginia Beach. Rickey Delcambre LANCASTER, Pa. - Rickey J.H. Delcambre, 59, passed away peacefully Friday, May 1, 2010, at LGH surrounded by his loving family. Born April 24, 1951 in New Iberia, La., he was the son of the late Issac and Georgia (LeBlanc) Delcambre. He was married to Kathleen A. (Arpey) Delcambre on June 17, 1973. Rickey retired as a command master chief after serving 24 years of active duty as a nuclear engineer with the U.S. Navy. After retirement, Rick enjoyed a successful career in hospital facilities management including the former St. Joseph's Hospital, now Lancaster Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph's Hospital in Reading and Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia. He was of the Catholic faith. In addition to his wife, he will be lovingly missed by his son, Jacob Delcambre, husband of Cristy and their son, Jake of Virginia Beach; four sisters, Georgia Olivier, Alura Benoit, Betty Landry and Gail Castille, all of New Iberia, La. Robert Francis Skinner VIRGINIA BEACH - Robert Francis Skinner, 81, passed away Saturday, May 1, 2010, in Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. A man of kindness, compassion, integrity and tremendous faith, he was loved by many and will be greatly missed. Born in Norfolk on March 14, 1929, he was the son of William Luther and Sophie Skinner. As a member of the Granby High School football team, the Comets, Bob played in the first Oyster Bowl at Foreman Field in 1946. Upon graduation, he went to the University of Virginia on a football scholarship. Afterwards, he worked in pharmaceutical sales for Miles Laboratory until his retirement He was an avid golfer, a long time member of Bayside Baptist Church and a member of the Masons, Bayside branch. Bob was predeceased by his parents; his brothers, William Luther "Dudie" Skinner Jr. and Wilson F. "Bubby" Skinner Sr.; his first wife, Joyce R. Skinner; and his son, Robert F. "Robby" Skinner Jr. Surviving him are his beloved wife, Shirley Jean Skinner; his sister, Carolyn Skinner Riviere (Nesbitt D. "Sack"); his daughters, Frances McLure (Bobby) and JoAnn Hubbard (Benny Thomas); and stepchildren, Allen Perrel (Erica Petersen) and Teresa Perrel (Sidney Wenger). DAVIS, Sarah Nelson Dawson, 85, departed this life on Sunday, May 2, 2010, at Duke Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina. She is survived by her beloved husband of sixty-five years, The Reverend John William Sutphin Davis, retired, Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina; her daughter, Mary Shuford Davis Crawford and Mary's husband, James Bartlett Crawford, of Richmond, Virginia; her son, John William Sutphin Davis Jr. and John's wife, Cami Stryker Davis, of Richmond, Virginia; and her five grandchildren, Sarah Latham Moore, Kathryn Longino Moore, John William Sutphin Davis III, Elizabeth Talbot Davis and Grace Stryker Davis, to whom she was affectionately known as "SaSa." Sarah was born on August 20, 1924, in Gaston County, North Carolina, the first daughter of Lucile Ross Reams Dawson and Council Claudius Dawson of Cramerton, North Carolina. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her siblings, Council Sydney Dawson, Florence Latham Dawson and Suzanne Wooten Dawson Tanner. Sarah is a graduate of The National Cathedral School in Washington, D.C.; St. Mary's Junior College in Raleigh, North Carolina; and Women's College, University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She was an active member of Christ Church, Rocky Mount, N.C.; St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Durham, N.C.; St. Mary's Chapel, Raleigh, N.C.; The Church of the Holy Innocents, Henderson, N.C.; and St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Richmond, Virginia. Sarah was a dedicated lifelong community leader and volunteer. She served with The American Red Cross, Durham, N.C., and received that Chapter's Distinguished Volunteer Award in 1967. She volunteered with UNICEF and served with The Friends of the H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library in Henderson, N.C.; the Episcopal Church Women, Diocese of North Carolina; and she was a grateful member of the St. Mary's School Alumni Association. Sarah was loved by all who knew her and accepted God's amazing grace with great grace of her own. Her family wishes to express deep gratitude for Sarah's multitude of faithful friends and for her long life of faith and service. A service of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, May 6, 2010, 11 a.m. at The Church of the Holy Innocents, Henderson, N.C. The Reverend Donald Lowery will officiate. The family will receive friends in The Great Hall immediately following interment in the columbarium of the church Memorial Garden. Memorial services will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Durham, North Carolina, and St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Richmond, Virginia, at a later date. She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip Sloan Powers; grandson, Jacin Powers; brothers, Herbert, James and Arthur; and sister, Laura May. She is survived by her brother, Paul Gear; sister, Rosalie Poole; sons, Philip S. Powers Jr., Timothy W. Powers and Scott E. Powers; grandchildren, Tamra, Bryan Scott, Kevin and Dominic; great-grandchildren, Sara, Jonathon, Tyler, Haley, Elizabeth and Alexandra; and 19 nieces and nephews. A graduate of the University of Maryland, she was a wonderful, devoted wife and mother, and was a beautiful treasure that will be missed by all. Vachel Wrenn Dean NORFOLK - Vachel Wrenn Dean, 54, passed away April 29, 2010 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He is survived by his daughters, Sharonda Dean and Mrs. Felicia Walker Brown; his two granddaughters; his brothers, Carlton Dean Sr. and Wilson Thomas III; his sister, Miranda Dean Robinson; four nephews, two uncles; a host of family members and many friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mrs. Viola Dean and his grandmother, Mrs. Edith Berry of Memphis, Tenn. Vachel was born in Memphis. As a child, he attended Mount Zion AME Church. He became a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity at Memphis State University. He moved to Norfolk in 1989 where he lived and worked with his brother Carlton at Absolute Pest Management Inc. and C.E. Dean Construction. Vachel was a 17-year heart transplant recipient who lived a prosperous life before and after the surgery. A viewing will be held at E.H. Ford Mortuary, 3309 Elvis Presley Blvd., Memphis, on Friday, May 7, from 3 to 6 p.m. with a memorial service lead by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity from 6 to 7 p.m. The funeral will be held at Mount Zion AME Church, 42 S. Parkway, Memphis on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the burial immediately following.

Virgil Martin Jr. KILL DEVIL HILLS - Virgil Martin Jr., 81, passed away Monday, May 3, 2010, at the Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head. He was born in Walterboro, S.C. on Oct. 28, 1928 to the late Rebecca Jefferies and Virgil Martin Sr. He grew up in Orangeburg, S.C., and joined the Navy at 17. He served four years, attended the University of South Carolina and remained the Naval Reserve until he was called back into service in 1950 and served 30 years. After retiring from the Navy, he obtained a degree in real estate and accounting and worked for Goodman Segar Hogan - Chesapeake in residential real estate. Later, he worked as a consultant for Planning Research Corporation in Virginia Beach. He and his wife Barbara moved to the Outer Banks in 1992, where they have since spent their retirement years. Mr. Martin was a member of Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church, a charter member of the local M.O.A.A., and also a member of the National M.O.A.A. In addition to his parents, he is also predeceased by two brothers, Elmer Martin, Dr. David Martin; and a sister, Thelma Martin. Mr. Martin is survived by his wife, Barbara Smoak Martin of the Kill Devil Hills residence; three sons, Barry Martin of Connelly Springs, N.C., Dale Martin and wife Debra of Palm Coast, Fla., Brandt Martin and wife Beth of Slidell, La.; four grandchildren, Kristan Nichole Martin of Tampa, Fla., Dylan Hunter Martin of Palm Coast, Fla., Natalie Kate Martin and Noah Christopher Martin, both of Slidell, La.; a sister, Edith Martin of White Rock, S.C.; and a brother, Melvin Martin of Myrtle Beach, S.C. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 10, at Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church. The family would like to sincerely thank the many doctors, nurses, friends, relatives, Dare Home Health and Hospice, and the Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church family for all of the love, support, and care they have offered and given during these last years of Virgil's courageous fight to overcome cancer. KIBLER, William Carroll "Willie," 63, of Midlothian, died May 3, 2010. He was preceded in death by his father, John Lee Kibler Jr.; one sister, Betty Ann White-Hurst; one brother, Jack Kibler; and his grandson, Logan William Furlough. Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Karen H. Willie enjoyed playing golf and was a fan of the Boston Red Sox, Washington Redskins, and Randolph-Macon athletics. While at Randolph-Macon, he joined the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity.
